![]() If you have ANY memories of Maelstrom, please feel free to send them to this blog so that this ride can continued to be cherished by Disney Parks and EPCOT fans alike. I will be posting these wonderful asks publicly so that they can be shared with everyone who cherished this wonderful and nostalgic attraction. However, several of you have left many touching stories and memoirs in my askbox about the ride. On September 12th, 2014, it was officially announced that the ride would be closing its doors forever on October 5th, 2014, taking with it much of the respectful culture of the Norway pavillion and in turn, a bit of World Showcase as well.ĭue to transportation issues, I was not able to visit this ride again after the trip in which the previous photos I’ve documented on this blog were taken. Sadly, the unofficial rumors that were passed around in late 2013 and January 2014 that Maelstrom would be closed down in light of a new dark ride based on Frozen have indeed came true. But I will try to keep this blog up and running once again, now that things are more in order. Things are much better now, but it caused me to have to pull away from this account for quite a while. maelstrom epcot norway norway pavilion world showcase wdw maelstrom ride frozen frozen ride walt disney world disney world save maelstromĪ lot happen to my family and in my personal life the past year. ![]() A Frozen ride would be more than welcomed into Walt Disney World, but there has to be a better way and place to build it without attacking Maelstrom.ĭisney, please give Maelstrom the renovation it needs, but don’t take it a way from your guests like this. Regardless of how outdated and cheesy the ride can be for some, replacing Maelstrom with a Frozen attraction is like replacing the real culture with a Disney-fied substitute that doesn’t quite embrace the culture and “spirit of Norway” the way that the rest of Epcot’s World Showcase was meant to.Īnd replacing it with a Frozen ride because Frozen is simply more marketable for little kids would be an insult to Norwegian culture. It is a homage to Norway’s culture, but does admirably take a few liberties, as it is an adaptation, after all. Keep in mind that Arendelle, the place in which Frozen takes place, is a mythical location that is very heavily BASED on Norway and Scandinavia. And taking Maelstrom out of the park would be like a slap in the face to the country’s culture. The thing is, for Norway, Maelstrom (and its post-show video, admirable rather outdated) was that. ![]() ![]() ![]() Additionally, most of all of the pavilions at Epcot have some sort of attraction that pays respect to the mythology and histories of each of these nations. In fact, every SINGLE one of the pavilions has a cast member work force made up of men and women directly from their respective nations. And I understand why some people aren’t as connected to it as something like Peter Pan’s Flight.īut the point of the World Showcase is to pay respects to nations and cultures from around the world. Sure, I love Maelstrom to bits, but even I will be the first to admit that the ride has needed a major renovation for years, and it’s age does really show. ![]()
